Lecture: All Our Own Work

Speakers: Trevor and Faye Yerbury

We are delighted to have Trevor and Fay Yerbury visit the club. Trevor Yerbury comes from a long and historic family of professional photographers. Trevor's Great Grandfather established the company in 1864 and Trevor is the 4th generation to carry out the family tradition.

Trevor and Faye will be showing an assortment of their images including Portraits and Art Nudes.

Trevor holds a total of 14 Kodak European Gold Awards. His SWPP awards include UK Glamour Photographer 2006 and UK Fashion Photographer 2006. Faye holds a Kodak Gold Award and, like Trevor, is a Fellow of the Society of Wedding and Portrait Photographers. Her SWPP awards are for UK Architectural Photographer 2006.

Lecture: High Light

Speaker: Colin Prior

After a very successful talk back in December 2007 we are delighted to have Colin back to the club. I am sure as before, this will be an inspirational talk about some of the stories behind Colin's latest book "High Light". Over the past 25 years, he has explored the world's wildest places, chasing his fascination with landscape, nature and indigenous culture. His award-winning images include some of Scotland's wildest and most remote mountain landscapes. Colin is a Fellow of the Royal Photographic Society and a founding member of the International League of Conservation Photographers.

We are delighted to have Dianne visit the club. Dianne has always had an interest in photography, but her photography has been defined greatly by the likes of Rikki O' Neill, a friend and mentor. "In her images she hope's to bring a memory or special moment back, to sprinkle the image with a little magic for the viewer". Still Life is her favourite. She will be showing a selection of Monochrome and Colour Prints.

Lecture: Scottish Nature

Speaker: Fergus Gill

It is great to have such a young and talented photographer as Fergus along to the club. Fergus first began taking photos at the age of nine and was always encouraged by his dad. In 2004 he won Wildlife Photographer of the Year in the 11-14 year category for a picture he took of the Aurora Borealis and his interest became a full time passion after that. Now studying Biology, Chemistry and Geography at Glasgow University, he hopes to continue his hobby after graduation and would love to become a wildlife film maker. Please bring your camera, a tripod, torches and any fireworks that you may have, especially sparklers. Some string might be handy for swinging torches provided they have a secure loop on them.

Lecture: Going underground

Speaker: Colin Cavers

We are delighted to have Colin Cavers visit the club. Colin will be talking about a photographic documentary project he undertook (in 2000) at Longannet coal mine, photographing and recording the working life of the only deep coal mine still operating in Scotland at the time. Sadly the mine has since closed in 2002.

The photographs are the subject of the book: Black Diamonds: Photographs of Longannet Mine, Fife

Colin is a lecturer at Edinburgh College of Art. As a photographer his main area of concern is documentary with a special interest in India. Colin has published books from this work, and a variety of articles and radio features have been made about his work. Colin's work has been commissioned by national galleries and organisations and is held in public and private collections

Lecture: Commercial Jewellery Photography

Speaker: Andrew Neilson

We warmly welcome Andrew along to the club. He run's a very successful Commercial Jewellery Photography business in Glasgow. In his talk, Andrew will cover the Studio and history of his work. The equipment. The various market sectors he works in. The clients he works for. He will take a few clients briefs from start to finished product.

Andrew Neilson has sprung to prominence as an accomplished award wining Commercial Photographer with numerous awards in recent years. He was the winner, 2nd and 3rd place BIPP Commercial photographer of the year Scottish Region 2011, achieved the bronze in the UK Nationals of the BIPP in 2011, the Bronze Award BIPP National Adverting photographer of the year 2010 , BIPP Scotland 2009 awards, 2nd and 3rd place finalist - Nominated for Peter Grugeon award for best ABIPP portfolio, April 2009 - Awarded Associate of the British Institute for Professional Photography for his Jewellery photography (ABIPP) April 2009 - Nominated for best Licentiate portfolio July 2008 - Awarded Licentiate of the British Institute for Professional Photography Jewellery photography (LBIPP) July 2008

Lecture: Contemporary photography

Speaker: Ben Harman

Ben Harman from GoMA will be giving us a lecture on Contemporary photography. Ben is a curator of Contemporary Art responsible for objects in the fine art collection dating from 1960 to the present day. Ben studied History of Art at Anglia University in Cambridge. Whilst in Cambridge he undertook work experience at Kettle's Yard and the Cambridge Darkroom Gallery. On moving to London he worked for public and commercial galleries such as Chisenhale Gallery and Sadie Coles HQ. We are delighted to have him visit the club.

Internal Evening: Robert Simpson Cup 2012

This will be an internal evening of peer-reviewed appraisal of prints produced by club members. Every member is invited to bring 3 prints for anonymous peer review. Each print will be labeled with a number on the night and put out for display. Members will then anonymously select 5 of their favourite prints without an order of preference. In the event of a tie the previous winner of the Robert Simpson Cup, Duncan McCallum, will act as adjudicator and provide the casting vote.

Lecture: Double Act

Speakers: Guy and Paula Davies

We are delighted to have Guy and Paula visit the club. Guy and Paula will be showing a selection of their photographs from home and abroad (not a travelogue) Guy's preference is for landscapes but he also love's waterfalls and seascapes. In 2009, Guy was awarded the AFIAP distinction and later in the year the PPSA distinction of the Photographic Society of America. He was also very pleased to achieve the Associateship of the Royal Photographic Society with a panel of prints showing details of sandstone rocks. Paula has been using digital cameras exclusively since 2003. She is Honorary Vice-President of Stokesley Photographic Society.She was awarded a Fellowship of the Royal Photographic Society (FRPS) in May 2007. Paula has had many photographs published in books.

Lecture: 'My Life in Mono'

Speaker: Peter J Clarke FRPS EFIAP/p APSA PPSA

We are delighted to have Peter visit the club. For the past 25 years or so he has specialised exclusively in landscape photography in both monochrome print and colour slide, in both the British Isles and the South-western United States. His talk will be on Monochrome landscapes of the British Isles and of the South western United States - a mix of silver halide and digital prints. Peter has been awarded the Fellowship of the Royal Photographic Society in 1992, the "Excellence" de la Fédération Internationale de l'Art Photographique - Platinum (EFIAP/p) in 2003 and, as a 5* Mono Print Exhibitor of the Photographic Society of America, the PPSA in 2004. In 2006 he was honoured by the PSA with the award of the Associateship APSA for services to photography.

Internal Crit Night - Art Not Sport - An Evening of Exhibition and Critique

In a new format (devised by the club's own Gordon Saunders), we will have a night of friendly and constructive critique about prints that member's bring along on the evening. Our discussions will be aided by the critique of an invited guest.

New members are particularly encouraged to participate. Each member is invited to bring along 1 of their own prints. Members may also choose to convey a story or narrative content by using more than 1 related print or a montage of images on one print. In this case it is appropriate that the images are seen as one cohesive body of work. Gordon feels this approach will open an avenue of expression that is not available in traditional competitions. If necessary, he will prepare a more detailed guide nearer to the night. In the interim he invites members to consider the way that photojournalists might show a short series of pictures, which say much more than a single image could. Alternatively click on the link above.

Prints may be old or new, of any size or shape and be on any subject the member wishes. There is no need to mount the print. All prints will be exhibited throughout the night. If they wish, members will have 1 minute to introduce their print. The guest will respond for a maximum of 2-3 minutes. The member will then be given the right of reply for 1 more minute. Those who feel uncomfortable about public speaking will not be forced to comment on their own prints.

This is NOT a competition. The invited guest is not a judge in the formal sense and no comparison will be made between prints in the more formal part of the evening. No marks will be awarded and no favourites will be formally identified.

Gordon hopes that this will also be a very sociable and friendly evening with an opportunity for you to discuss photography with fellow members and come to understand more about their ways of thinking concerning the art of photography.

Lecture: "A Passion for Landscapes"

Speaker: Brian Clark DPAGB

Brian has been interested in photography for well over 30 years and took his first steps as a member of our club where I first met Malcolm. The last 10 years have been his most productive and he has had many successes in international salons and other competitions. Brain won the landscape section of the Scottish Nature Photography Awards last year and has had images published in several books and photography magazines. He is currently President of Dundee Photographic Society. In 2004 he was awarded an Associate of the RPS and was awarded a Distinction by the PAGB. A book of his images, "Vision and Light" was published in 2008.
